Research and Planning: College Magazine Drafts

These are my drafts for my college magazine. I have just simply shown how my magazine will be laid out. With the drafts I have also shown the colour scheme that I will be using for my actual magazine. On my front cover I have also shown what type of stories and articles will be in my magazine, as well as providing a made up picture of my main central image, a medium close up shot. I chose to use these colour as they look professional and it gives a college style feel.

Research and Planning: Interviews

Another research activity we did was to go out with our basic design plans and ask students what they thought of the magazine design. I interviewed 3 people and asked their opinion on a number of things including:

  • Would you pay for a college magazine?
  • If so how much would you pay for a college magazine?
  • What do you think of the name of the college magazine?
  • How often should the magazine be published and why?
  • What would you like to be included in the college magazine?
I chose to ask these questions as I think that they would be very relevant to the process of having a college magazine and also give an insight into what should go into a college magazine to interest its audience. Unfortunately the people I interviewed asked to not be filmed so I just recorded the questions being asked.

Research and Planning: Semiotics

This is the work I have done in Photoshop. It shows that I can choose fonts to match the style of writing. We were given three titles; Popworld, Death Metal and popcorn, for these titles we had to choose semiotics that matched the words given. I used a website called DaFont to choose these semiotics, I used this website as it gave me a variety of designs to choose from.

Research and Planning: Medium Close up

I have uploaded these images to show that I understand that these are the style of shots I will have to use on my own college magazine. These images are called medium close ups, I know this because I can only see their heads and part of their chest. Medium would have been from their waist up and close up would have only been their heads.

Planning and Research: Magazine analysis

For this task we were asked to chose a college magazine and analyse it. I can immediately tell that this is a college magazine, firstly because of the masthead 'Ridgewater College'. Its a very simple way of explaining the the reader that this magazine is all about that college. Also the cover lines give away the idea of it being a college magazine as they feature headings such as 'Global learning' and mention a college education. The main central image also gives away the feel of a college magazine as the mise-en-scen of the girl is made out to be what a stereotypical student looks like, by dressing her and styling her hair and make up in that way.

Research and Planning: Film Review InDesign

This is what I created in InDesign. I used a film review off of Empire website, and used an image I found on the internet. I went onto layout to create columns for my review, this makes it look more professional and realistic. Then I inserted a picture of a still in the film by using the place tool to alter the size. Then I made a title and altered it to make it brighter using colours and stroke. I then inserted a box over the page and coloured it, after I arranged so it was sent behind the text and images.

Research and Planning: Photoshop challenge

This is my Photoshop challenge. The task was to follow through steps and create something like this. Firstly we had to open an A4 document to work on, so I opened Photoshop and chose the size A4. Next we had to insert text that said "AS Media Studies" and make the font Century Gothic in the size 24 and it had to be red. After that the background was changed to a shade of blue. To alter the text I gave it a drop shadow by using a filter tool. When I had finished I placed a picture of a well known celebrity, Simon Cowell, onto the computer and changed his hair to red using the brush tool. To finish off I gave the image a border of a similar colour. This activity has helped me as I now know more about Photoshop and tools I can use on it.

Research and Planning: Skin Tutorial

This is my Photoshop skin tutorial. I took an image of a girl and altered it to look like this, from the original image I have removed imperfections, changed her hair colour and added make up. To do this I used the spot remover tool and smart blur this helped me to improve the quality of her skin and make it look less "shiny". For the make up and hair change I basically used the brush tool. This allowed me to add on different colours to her face which I positioned to look like make up, I made it look more realistic by using the opaque tool to fade the shade less. The make up I added was blush, eyeshadow and lipstick as well as adding eyelashes. For her eyelashes I used a different brush that was shaped like eyelashes so it was more effective.

Research and Planning: Film Poster

This is my film poster. I chose a well known film poster and changed the faces to mine and my friend, Beths. I did this in Photoshop, by using the lasso tool to select the faces from the other pictures. Then I changed the colours using the colour balance tool.

Research and Planning: Photoshop

This is the first time that I've used Photoshop. Today i created this CD front cover using filter, colour blend and various other applications to achieve this look and create this image. I named it clouds because i made the background look like clouds, so it made sense.
